The Seagrass Lab

Exploring the ecology, physiology and omics of seagrasses —
from the Red Sea and beyond
Prof. Gidon Winters
The Seagrass Lab is a marine plant ecology research group based at the Ben-Gurion University (BGU), Eilat Campus (southern Israel) — on the shores of the Gulf of Aqaba (northern Red Sea). We study seagrasses, the hidden meadows of the sea, using field ecology, physiology, mapping and cutting-edge molecular tools. Our work spans the Red Sea, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean, with a focus on how seagrasses respond to a changing world.

Our goals:
1. Establish Eilat as a world-leading centre for seagrass research — extreme seagrass in an extreme environment.
2. Translate our research into conservation actions, restoration programs, and marine policy that would ensure the future of our seagrass meadows
3. Mentor and train the next generation of marine biologists — rigorous, independent, and ready to lead their own research.
