Join The Seagrass Lab

We are a young, ambitious marine plant ecology group at Ben-Gurion University's Eilat Campus — right on the shores of the Red Sea.

We work at the intersection of field ecology, molecular biology, and AI-driven science, and we're looking for a motivated MSc student to join us.

Open Position: MSc in Marine Biology / Biotechnology

Population Genetics of Halophila stipulacea in the Gulf of Aqaba

Halophila stipulacea is one of the world's most successful marine plant invaders — yet the genetic structure of its native Red Sea populations remains poorly understood. This project will use population genomics tools to characterise genetic diversity, connectivity, and local adaptation across multiple sites in the Gulf of Aqaba, laying the groundwork for understanding what makes this species such a formidable invader.

You will:

  • Conduct SCUBA-based field sampling across GoA seagrass meadows

  • Extract DNA and generate genomic data (RADseq or similar)

  • Analyse population structure, gene flow, and signatures of local adaptation

  • Contribute to a growing international research programme on H. stipulacea ecology and invasion biology

What we offer:

  • Full stipend funding

  • Fieldwork in one of the world's most spectacular marine environments

  • Training in molecular tools, bioinformatics, and AI-integrated research methods

  • Strong mentorship and connection to an international seagrass research network

Requirements

  • BSc in marine biology, biology, ecology, biotechnology, or a related field

  • Valid SCUBA certification is mandatory

  • Interest and some knowledge in molecular ecology and/or population genetics/bioinformatics

  • Enthusiasm, scientific curiosity, and a love of the sea

How to apply

Feel free to reach out informally first — send us a short email introducing yourself and what draws you to this project. Please include your CV and a brief cover letter.
